There Are Some Images That Never Leave

Last year I wrote a post about where I was on 9/11 and how it changed my life, as well as my view of the world. This year I find it hard to believe that it happened so many years ago, because it feels like it just happened.

My city has rebuilt, it has risen from the ashes, but it is by no means the same. The skyline is different, it just plain looks wrong. The Statue of Liberty has always been such a peaceful, calming presence to me, but now I worry about it being there. I feel like it needs extra protection.

I recall a fight with a friend in Australia after 9/11. She defended the act of terrorism, stating that what happened here on 9/11 “Happens every single day in other countries, and no one cares.” I’m paraphrasing here, but she made it sound like there was nothing tragic or wrong about it. Needless to say, I am quite clearly no longer friends with her, but I wish her and her ignorance well.

Unfortunately acts of terror DO occur in other countries, none of us are blind to that, but there are some acts of terror that live on in the souls of those that have to carry on.

All these years later, there is still less kindness in the world and more hatred.
